Sunday Minus The Sun Plus a Thurs Update

Bad news for all of you. The sqeeky clean person you thought you knew has turned into a racist. Most days after lunch I let my students have a class discussion on whatever is bothering them. Usually it is something ridiculous like a staff member at the other school "anaqing" in their bathroom and not flushing (they really talked about this one day.) This week though they decided to tell me all the ways I'm not fair. As I have been told so many times and related to them, "Life isn't fair." They don't quite understand that I allow certain students who continually show respect to everyone and do the right thing to sit in the comfy chair or check their email before class or certain other privileges.

It was at this point one student comes back with, "Well you're racist!"

At this point I'm thinking great, what did I let slip? I cautiously ask the student how I'm racist. She brought up the fact that I don't let girls play basketball in my after school games (which I actually do).

I told her, "Don't you mean sexist."

And cue the chorus, "EWWWW MISTER YOUUUUUUNG!!"

Man I love 6th graders!

Heartbeat Alaska
My students were walking up to the high school yesterday for a meeting after school where for a "Future Teachers of Alaska" meeting when they saw a couple cops with their guns drawn running up to a house. They quick came back to the elementary school telling everyone (not exaggerating when I say everyone, either) Apparently there was some sort of shooting across from the high school (which, as you might remember, was where one of the first high school shootings took place). Everyone was in a huge panic that it was actually at the high school.

Now it seemed to me that when four girls walk into the classroom after school saying there was a shooting and that they saw cops with guns isn't a reason to panic, but man were there some frightened teachers. I haven't heard anything since and it hasn't been on the news at all, so I guess no one is dead.

Top List
What I really really like right now:
1. When you put something in the microwave and set the timer for exact time it needs to cook.
2. Musk Ox Burgers (I just cooked one in the microwave to PERFECTION!)
3. When you wear can wear a heavy sweater, baseball cap, and no gloves outside and not be cold.
4. The fact that I only have 2.5 weeks left until I am flying home.
5. Teaching students about geography, history, and geology.
6. REI.com (Annual Clearance Sale going on now!- more about that in the Wanted List)
7. Mallie - He's Back! Actually just found out his name is "Shiloh"
8. Depressing Songs- yep, still haven't gotten off that kick
9. Anna "2SKI" for hooking me up with some incredible savings on Smart Wool

Bottom List
What I'm not liking:
1. Putting socks on with semi-wet feet and having them catch on your heel.
2. People ripping on my music selection
3. Uncooked eggs
4. Having a dangler in my nose and not being able to knock it out because there are always 20 sets of eyes watching my every move.
5. Miley Cyrus and her skanky ways... I kid.

Wanted
I'm afraid to even post this anymore. Each time I post I end up getting it. (Except for Miss Weio, damn her) Sleeping bag - Check. New hiking shoes - Check. New Job - Soon to be checked. Live by myself - Soon to be checked when I am hiking across Colorado alone.

So, now I have to decide something that I really, really need. How about an Azteca burrito? Or maybe a grinder from Red Pepper? YES & YES. Two of God's finer creations right there.

Word of the Week
Anaq: to crap, shat, make feces, brown stuff, crud, fecal matter, turd, drop trough and lay down a Cleveland Steamer, ordure, dejection, excreta, meconium, melaena, lientery, steatorrhea, or poo.

I have heard alot about anaqing lately, maybe due to lesson planning. Today we were writing a descriptive essay. I had them describe mud. First the look (anaq, diarhea, etc.) then the sound (farting, whatever else they could think of) and the smell (obviously they couldn't resist.) Smart lesson planning, big guy...

Weekly Quiz
What do fellow teachers, my principal, and nearly every aid in the school call me?
a. Brandon
b. Brian
c. Mr. Young
d. B-Don
e. Apaqutaq

Ya'll stink at voting so I'm just going to tell you. The answer is C. They call me Mr. Young, and it annoys me to no end. I get called Mr. Young for six hours straight by my students, I don't need to hear any more of it.

I have one aide that calls me Brandon!! in front of the students and, speaking of her, I meant to have one post titled "I have Aid(e)s" to tell about some of their antics. She is classic to say the least.

Well enjoy the update. See you all very soon.
